The hogs at Sunrise Farms, a Berkshire cross, are fed natural feeds without added growth hormones or antibiotics. They are not confined, have access to the outdoors, are well-bedded, and free to move about our farm. Sows use natural farrowing systems that allow them to come and go at will for birthing and nursing. There is no MSG in our sausage and no added nitrates or nitrites in our bacon or ham. Purchase the whole animal or split it with a friend and enjoy high-quality, healthy meat all year long. The average dressed weight of a whole hog is 175-225 lbs. The amount of table-ready meat after the hog is cut, wrapped, and frozen is approximately 60-75% of the dressed weight.

USDA Certified Vs. Custom Processing

Sunrise Farms partners with local meat processors to provide our whole hog customers with USDA Certified and Custom (Non-USDA Certified) processing options. What’s the difference? USDA processing facilities must come under federal regulations for animal slaughter. This means a federal or state inspector must be on site whenever animals are being slaughtered. While custom processors must undergo routine state inspections, they may avoid the additional cost of continual inspection. If you are more comfortable with a USDA inspected facility or if you purchase our whole animals for resale, you should buy our USDA processed animals. You get to choose the cuts to your specifications. If you are buying for personal use, we can sell you the animal, and you work directly with the processor to determine cuts and schedule pickup from their facility. We recommend local custom processors we know and trust and who have great reputations in our community. Custom processing generally saves you 10-15% in total cost. What does that mean for you? Electing to use our Non-USDA Certified processor gives you a more economical way to purchase locally-processed whole hog!

Considerations

  • The amount of table-ready meat after the hog is cut, wrapped, and frozen is approximately 7% (140 lbs.) of dressed weight (200 lbs.) and as little as 60% (120 lbs.) if a number of boneless cuts are ordered.
  • The actual amount of table-ready meat varies according to the type of cuts that you choose.
  • The number of a particular cut will vary according to the types of cuts you choose.
  • You will need about 5-6 cubic feet of freezer space to store your pork.

How do I order?

  • Call 540-337-3773 or use the online order form to place your order and check availability.
  • Decide which cuts you prefer, and we will send that information to the slaughterhouse.
  • Pick up your packaged meat at the slaughterhouse when it is ready. We will call you to arrange pickup.
